You've probably heard of canyoneering in the South Cebu, it's now gaining popularity among adrenaline junkies. Canyoneering or canyoning is traveling in canyons by trekking, scrambling, swimming, climbing, jumping, and rappelling.
Last Sunday, I got the chance to experience the exhilarating downstream canyoneering in Alegria along with eleven other members of the Cebu Bloggers Society (CBS). We were invited by iCanyoneering Cebu and Kawasan Nature Park Multi-purpose Cooperative to experience a day of extreme adventure.
I was extremely tired that day, I've been awake since morning the previous day. I still managed to party after spending twelve hours at work and another hour or two for an event meeting. Went home around three in the morning to wash up and change then headed directly to South Bus Terminal. I sat there like a zombie waiting for the others at gate 10 - indeed, there's no rest for the wicked.

We left South Bus Terminal fifteen past five in the morning. I swear, I was asleep the entire trip and woke up just a couple of minutes before we have to get off the bus. Man! the bus driver drove like crazy! We arrived earlier than expected and waited at our pick-up point. We were warmly welcomed by one of the operators, Sir Isau, and took us to his house for breakfast and briefing. We changed our clothes shortly after breakfast and put our canyoneering gears on.

I was very determined to jump while I was waiting for my turn, but as soon as I stood there, my knees started shaking and felt like spaghetti noodles. It took me a really long time before I finally jumped. There were lots of people from other groups waiting for their turn. I forced myself to jump since there's no other way to enter the canyon.

Mark's right, everyone's cool and approachable. New friends are always good and yes, it's my first time meeting all of them! |
Out of clumsiness, I fell down and landed on a sharp rock. I had cut on my wrist and bruises on both knees. I highly recommend wearing leggings and rash guard, wear your safety gear at all times to avoid accidents and injuries. Always listen to your guides and make sure to follow instructions.

The second to the last jump site. Wasn't brave enough to do it, maybe next time. |
Downstream canyoneering starts in Alegria and exits in Kawasan Falls in Badian. It takes about four hours or more to finish the activity depending on how fast your group moves. Our guides were all professionals, they've been doing this job for a long time and their experience is evident. They are very familiar with the canyon and maintained a high level of safety as our guides.
Thank you so much iCanyoneering Cebu and Kawasan Coop for such a very challenging experience. I would highly recommend this adventure to anyone considering canyoneering for the first time.
