Monster waves at Dahican Beach in Mati

Last April, I went to Mati, Davao Oriental for SummerFrolic 2016. Okay, I know it's been 6 months already since I have been there, but I thought it would be such a waste not to share this with you guys and you might want to consider booking a flight to Davao after seeing some photos of this hidden Paradise in Mindanao. I was born and raised in Mindanao but I haven't heard of Mati until two years ago from my office mate, Franz who's already on her second or third year going to SummerFrolic.

SummerFrolic is an annual 2-day summer music festival held in Mati, Davao Oriental. The event is said to be one of the well-attended festivals in the Davao region that features talented DJs and musicians from different parts of the country.

SummerFrolic 2016 Crew-fie! I took this photo using my mobile phone inside that waterproof plastic pouch thingy. Quality isn't that good as you can see.

Our travel to Davao City was very smooth. We took the 7:20 AM flight from Cebu then arrived in Davao after an hour. There were 10 of us so we decided to take a van from the airport to Gaisano Mall where the van terminal to Mati is located. We had a quick breakfast, then hopped on a van to Mati. Vans going to Mati usually leaves every hour and travel time is approximately three hours from the city, but expect to get there earlier than expected if your van driver drives like a mad man. The fare is at PHP 220 per person.

Tropical Kanakbai Home in Dahican

As soon as we reached Mati, we asked the driver if he could drop us directly to Tropical Kanakbai Home since we were the only passengers left. He agreed to drop us there, but of course with additional charges. There is no such thing as free in this world anymore.

We stayed for four nights at Tropical Kanakbai Home. It's a privately owned beach resort in Dahican that takes visitors and tourists on a reservation basis only. The place was perfect for a big group like us, suites have individual balconies, veranda, small swimming pool, and billiard table. The resort will also save you from the hassle of bringing your own kitchen wares as they are fully equipped.

I took this photo while riding a motorbike with Franz on our way to the grocery shop. Ahhh I wish life is like this everyday!

Local guys waiting for the perfect wave to skim

I would love to skim and surf, but my experience on our second day scared the heck out of me. I nearly drowned by the shore! A few steps and it's already deep. I was trying to go past the waves because I wanted to swim, but as soon as I got into the water, I got sucked in towards a big wave then another one came before I could even get back on my feet. I was already imagining things in my head - you know, watching too much shark attack movies and documentaries. I literally crawled to get myself out of the water 😂

NO CLASS. Magnus and Kris Wehus killed it on the second day!

I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but I think Magnus resembles Avicii. I swear! I sat beside these two at the airport while on my way back to Cebu. I had a good look at his face, the resemblance is uncanny.

Last day 😞

We were supposed to take surfing lessons on my last day but we all woke up very late, we just stayed by the beach all morning instead. And oh, guess what!? I nearly drowned by the seashore. Again. The waves must hate me that much, but I'm surely coming back soon!
